Building a sustainable reading culture, empowering intellectual discovery

Established in 2019 by Atomic Data & ALIGHT, the Nakivale Community Library Network is a community-driven library and information resource center located in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement of Uganda, Africa.

Mission-driven library objectives:

Improvement

To improve reading and writing skills among children and adults in Nakivale

Enhancement

To enhance capacity of refugees to innovate, recreate and solve day to day life.

Promotion

To promote increased enrollment in schools and adult literacy platforms through increased access to educational resources for out of school children and youth.

Reduction

To reduce the rates of juvenile delinquency within the settlement through provision of alternative opportunities for free entertainment and constructive recreation activities.

Development

To develop contextualized reading and illustrative materials for cultural sharing awareness.

Who are you supporting?

Nakivale, Uganda is the oldest refugee settlement in Africa and is home to 122,000 refugees. Residents, 76% of whom are women and children, arrived from Burundi, South Sudan, DRC, Kenya, Somalia, and other surrounding conflict/crisis zones. Education facilities are all over capacity and formal learning is often out of reach, physically and financially.
